The Plant That Pulls A Sickie

I spotted this in my feeds yesterday:

The plant that pretends to be ill

Makes me wonder if all my ferns are secreting silvery slime all over their fronds to deter slugs from eating them. Except that bits of my ferns are missing, so clearly it isn't working.
