Earlier in the week there was a big do at work. And as a result there is a surplus of plants used in the displays. Hubster doesn't know it yet, but I'm bringing home four Soleirolia soleirolii (aka "Mind Your Own Business" or "Baby's Tears), and two young Hydrangea macrophylla. I am not a fan of hydrangeas. I see them in almost every front garden (and the gardens that don't have them have a lone cordyline or more often than not concrete), and I think they're a bit of a cop-out. They look after themselves pretty much, they grow quickly, they hide you from view if you can't be bothered to get net curtains, and they make big flowers. They look a bit municipal (a wonderful adjective my mother always uses negatively).
Having said that, mainly because they were free, I'll give them a go. They're coming back into fashion again, so perhaps I can get some cuttings off them and sell them on.
I'm going to need a bigger greenhouse.
So anyway, I'll be repotting the Dicksonia. I want to get him into a terracotta pot, and now is a good time to repot him. I'll tie up the fronds so I can a) see what I'm doing and b) avoid damaging the crown. And I just happen to have a terracotta pot lying around...
This will only be the second time I've put more than one plant in a container display, the first being my very pretty herb pot (Hubster can't resist touching the leaves every time he goes past). I think I will go for one hydrangea surrounded by all four baby's tears. Not sure what to do with the other one, but if it stays alive for a week I have a cunning plan.
Photos will follow.
